There are many music genres that float my boat as many of you may already know, growing up in the 1970s I had an early flavour for the punk rock scene which morphed into the mod revival, now there are many categories or styles of music that fall within the broad church loosely using the term mod or modernist to give it its correct title. Within this musical culture I lean towards the 79-revival period and the genre created in the mid to late 60s in the USA called garage - Again this genre has many different categories Rock, psychedelia, fuzz, and my favourite punk. Now for reasons unknown the U.K garage punk scene has based itself around the north Kent area of the Medway, with some notable acts old and new - so many to mention I'd become fascinated with What I deem ‘’the British garage mod style’’. A few years ago, I was introduced to a band called The Dying Breed who were first class garage artists subsequently though with limited success they tried a new angle with a ‘’Quadrophenia style rock opera’’ called ‘’Goodbye Victory Road’’ - again breaking barriers but probably not understood by the British music media and fans alike.
So, what has this got to do with Dead Star Boys? well let me tell you formed out of the above bands comes this brilliant album with a hard-core garage punk sound. If I was to place the sound liking to other bands I'd say if you mashed up the Sex Pistols, the Chords, with the hint of the modern Medway garage sound and a spoonful of early 70s glam rock, you would become pretty close.
I've listened to the album over the last fortnight many times and each song tells its own story with honest lead vocals from front man Viv at times intense, Backed up with superb drumbeats , excellent guitar riffs , and a rumbling bass which I absolutely adore., all creating this wonderful atmospheric sound, blending personal influences whilst crafting each track.
There are a number of standout tracks which I personally like, Golden opportunity, We are the new wave, Satellite kids , Exploding band tonight and Medway wake up , There’s a lot of catchiness in these often quite fast-paced songs.- Needless to say all the 12 tracks are Equally good in their own right. It is never easy to review an album which can sometimes over complicate what you're thinking whilst listening to the tracks so this leads me to say this is One mighty fine hard core garage punk Album which would sit right in any 21st century modern boys record collection. Don't just take my word for it -the album offers plenty for aficionados to discover, you need to play this often, loud and with conviction anything less doesn't do the Dead Star Boys justice!
