The band’s back story is the stuff of legends, of course Back in the late ’80s — when Noel Gallagher was a roadie for The Inspiral Carpets and Damon Albarn was still in a synth-duo — The Studio ’68! -fronted by future NME journo Paul Moody- left a trail of stylish chaos across the London gig circuit, their high-octane mix of. Hammond organ grooves and auto-destructive stage act so ahead of its time, MOJO editor Pat Gilbert described one gig as ‘laying the foundation stone for Britpop’.
Having imploded in spectacular fashion, the band’s cult status has grown over the years, thanks to appearances on both the ‘Eddie Piller Presents The Mod Revival’ and Cherry Red’s ‘Millions Like Us’ compilations. Reformed with all four members of the band’s classic line-up — Paul Moody: guitar/vocals, Simon Castell, drums, Will Beaven: Hammond organ, Patrick O’Sullivan: bass — the ‘Back With The Boys’ E.P. is every bit as thrilling as the music they produced back in the day.
“We’re back to blow the music industry apart,” says Moody of this unexpected return to the fray. “And catch up with a few old friends in the process.”
